Zomato on Sunday launched a new feature to reduce food waste – customers can snap up discarded items by offering “unbeatable” prices. Chief executive Deepinder Goyal said the company is seeing around 400,000 canceled orders every month – such orders now appear with customers within a 3km radius of its delivery partners.
“We do not encourage Zomato to cancel orders as this leads to a lot of food wastage. Despite having strict policies and no refund policy on cancellations, over 400,000 perfect orders were canceled on Zomato due to various reasons from customers. Reason,” Goyal said on X.
Canceled orders will be delivered in the original, untampered packaging at short notice (to ensure freshness). Customers can now snap up their orders at “unbeatable prices” and receive them within minutes.
“Zomato will not retain any proceeds (apart from required government taxes). The amount paid by a new customer will be shared with the original customer (if they paid online) as well as the restaurant partner. Orders containing distance or temperature sensitive items such as Ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies and certain perishable items, will not be eligible for food rescue,” Goyal clarified.
