In a podcast in the year 2023, Infosys founder Narayan Murthy had said that ‘India’s work productivity is the lowest in the world and to compete with countries like China, the youth of India will have to work extra hours. He said that the youth of the country should work for 72 hours a week. Japan and Germany had done this.’

After this statement, a global debate broke out. People were very angry and started saying that if a person works 72 hours a week, when will he give time to his family and children? People said that this statement is absolutely

Now people have again started a debate on Narayan Murthy’s recent statement. This time when he taught people parenting, they got irritated and started taunting him. Actually, speaking at a program in Bangalore, Murthy said that it is the responsibility of the parents to create a disciplined environment at home for the children’s studies. When asked how can students concentrate amidst the distraction of social media? Murthy said that parents cannot watch movies expecting that the children will concentrate on their studies.

He said, ‘If parents are going to watch movies and then saying ‘children- you study’, then there is no point in it. He said that ‘he used to take out more than three and a half hours every day to study with his children and his wife during their schooling. He said, this effort promotes a disciplined environment at home.’

‘Earlier you said work for 72 hours’

It was Murthy’s statement that enraged people on social media. One wrote- ‘If people start working 72 hours a week as Murthy advocated in 2023, will it be possible to spend time with their children?’ Another jokingly said- You yourself said that if we work 72 hours, what should we do with the children? Another said- ‘In short, it is difficult to maintain such a balance.’

‘We used to study with our children’

In the programme, Murthy also said that his family focuses completely on studies and teaching, with a strict ban on television from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. They continue to study together after dinner from 9 pm to 11 pm, reinforcing the culture of discipline. He said, “My wife’s argument was, if I am watching TV, I cannot ask my children to study. So she said, ‘I will give up my TV time and study’.”

On this people said- instead, buy books for them and encourage them to read on their own. All this is not so easy.
