The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard a petition seeking exemption for lawyers across the country from wearing black jackets during summers. But the court rejected the plea. The CJI said there is etiquette in the courts. You cannot argue in your pajamas.

“Exemptions have been given before the dress,” CJI DY Chandrachud said. “You have to wear something. You can’t argue in sleeveless pyjamas or shorts and a T-shirt. There should also be some etiquette. Tell us what the dress should be like.”

The CJI said, “The situation in Rajasthan is different from Bengaluru. There are some restrictions in bars. To maintain decorum, you have to wear proper clothes. The petition was filed by lawyer Shailendra Mani Tripathi.

The judge said he could make a suggestion to the Bar Council of India. Lawyer Shailendra Mani Tripathi said he would discuss the dress code for lawyers on behalf of the Bar Council of India and the Union of India.

The petition was also filed in advance

Earlier, a similar petition was filed in the Supreme Court in May, when the country was experiencing scorching summer heat, seeking a direction to exempt lawyers in high courts across the country from wearing black coats.
