Netflix’s OTT thriller Ye Kali Kali Anken After a gripping cliffhanger that left viewers talking after the first season, the show is back for a second season. However, while the twisted narrative and high stakes promise an exciting ride, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
The second season picks up where the first season left off – Purva (Anchal Singh) is kidnapped by the conniving Jalan (Arunodhi Singh), who asks her father Akhraj ( Saurabh Shukla) demands a ransom of 1 billion rupees. Turning point? Her husband Vikrant (Tahir Raj Bhasin) initially hired Jalan to kill her, but now becomes entangled in a complex web of deceit. What follows is a chaotic betrayal, escalating ransom demands (Rs 100 crore to Rs 1000 crore – why not?) and a storyline that pushes credibility to the limit.
Performance:
although Tahir Raj Bhasin Vikrant’s performance is noteworthy, with his distracting wig grabbing the audience’s attention in all the wrong ways.
at the same time, Aanchal Singh Purva is considered a central character, but her portrayal of stoicism and aloofness is disappointing, making it difficult for the audience to sympathize with her plight.
In contrast, Shweta Tripathi Shika brought authenticity to her character, but the regressive depiction of her storyline – Shika’s storyline felt dated, with an arranged marriage arrangement and an overly loving, devoted husband, to no end serenaded her – completely oblivious to her lack of interest. In today’s world, isn’t the first question couples ask each other: “Are you related to anyone else?”
Gurmeet Singh, however, shines in his role with undeniable charm and a commendable performance. His spycraft wizardry might add to the believability (blowing up old satellite footage to an astonishing level of detail!), but at least he keeps things engaging.
Advantages:
The standout elements of the series are Visual grandeur. The landscapes of India – especially those of the Himalayas – rival those of Europe. It’s a reminder that Indian scenes can serve as stunning backdrops for high-octane dramas. Occasionally poignant dialogue, like a pointed observation about privilege (“God is always in the rich man’s corner”), infuses the narrative with great moments.
weakness:
Unfortunately, the series falters in storytelling. Purva’s obsession with Vikrant and hatred towards her lack claritymaking the audience question the motivations behind their actions. The director’s inability to define character arcs results in a confusing plot that lacks emotional depth. The escape scenes (like the hospital tragedy in Purva) are so unbelievable that they pull the audience out of the story.
Furthermore, the series is filled with illogical moments – Rs. 10 billion rupees ransom! Don’t buy that! Why didn’t Shika’s husband realize she wasn’t interested in him? These lapses in logic take away the sense of suspense that a thriller like this needs. For example, it’s ridiculous to see Vikrant carrying a random head in his bag or dismembering a body in the house where Shikar’s wedding was held. Somehow, there was no stench, no suspicious looks, and absolutely no one noticed anything.
Not even background scoreIt’s crucial to maintaining the tension of a thriller, but it’s inconsistent – effective in some scenes and forgettable in others.
judgment:
although Ye Kali Kali Anken Season 2 dazzled with its stunning visuals and some standout performances (particularly Gurmeet Singh and Saurabh Shukla), its convoluted storyline, lackluster character development and The excessive plot twists make it an exhausting watch. The show attempts to be a high-stakes drama but ends up being a confusing, disjointed narrative.
