Woman molested in temple, casteist remarks were made… FIR lodged against accused BJP worker

A case of excessive misbehavior and violation of the dignity of a woman in a temple has come to light in Thane city of Maharashtra. The accused also made casteist remarks on the woman. Now the police have registered two cases against a BJP worker on this charge.

Giving information about the case on Friday, a Thane police officer told PTI that the police have registered an FIR against BJP worker Vijay Tripathi and some other accused on the basis of a complaint by a woman and a man on Thursday. He said that the incident took place during a meeting called at a temple to review the preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Which was organized by local leaders.

The police officer said that a case has been registered against the accused BJP leader Vijay Tripathi and three others under sections 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 298 (damaging or desecrating place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the complaint, the accused came to attend a meeting for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations on Wednesday night but entered the temple wearing shoes and when a woman objected to it, he touched her inappropriately.

According to the police officer, BJP leader Vijay Tripathi has also been named in the FIR lodged for allegedly abusing a man and making remarks about his caste during a meeting called by a former councillor Vikas Repale.

A case was registered against Tripathi and two others under the BNS and sections 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, the police officer said.

The police had earlier registered a case against former councillor and Shiv Sena leader Vikas Repale for attacking a 25-year-old Dalit man after a meeting at a temple. Speaking to the media, Repale claimed that he was not present at the spot and his name has been dragged into the case due to an old rivalry.
