The Supreme Court said on Thursday it would hear a plea in eight weeks seeking a ban on a website that features jokes about members of the Sikh community and portrays them in a bad light. “This is an important case,” Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan said.
ridicule of women’s clothing
Petitioner Harvinder Chaudhary informed the judge that she would consolidate her suggestions and those of other parties in the case and file a brief. The judge gave him eight weeks and listed the matter for a further hearing. During the hearing, Chaudhry highlighted the grievances of women in the Sikh community who were ridiculed for their attire. Apart from this, he also spoke about the problems faced by Sikh children in schools. “You prepare a small compilation for easy reading,” the bench said.
Over 5,000 sites mentioned
The Supreme Court agreed to hear the petition in October 2015, and since then more petitions have been filed raising similar claims. The petitioner had earlier mentioned that there are over 5,000 websites showing jokes about Sikhs and portraying them in a bad light. The petition said such websites showing Sikh jokes should be banned as they violate the fundamental right to life and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution.
