Regarding the census, according to government sources, it will start next year. According to sources, the plan will start in 2025 and continue until 2026. The Congress has targeted the BJP ever since the census was announced. Congress is asking the BJP about caste census. Veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on social media account X that conducting a caste census is the responsibility of the central government.
Jairam Ramesh said that notifications have just been received to extend the terms of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner. This means that the long-delayed 2021 census is finally about to take place.
Questions about caste census
Jairam Ramesh said two important questions about the census remain unclear. He asked the central government about the census
- Will this new census include a detailed count of all castes in the country, besides counting Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in every census since 1951? According to the Indian Constitution, such caste census is the responsibility of the central government.
- Whether this census will be used to determine the number of representatives of states in the Lok Sabha under Article 82 of the Indian Constitution (which provides that any such reorganization shall be based on the first census conducted after 2026 and the results thereof) will be used as publishing basis)? Will this hurt countries that have been leaders in family planning?
He also said that to answer these questions, it would be best to convene an all-party meeting as soon as possible.
The extension of terms of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner has just been notified. This means the long-delayed 2021 census is finally about to take place. But it remains completely unclear on two key issues.

Congress forces BJP
Veteran Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been advocating for caste census, has repeatedly reiterated that if the Congress government comes to power at the Centre, we will conduct a caste census. Congress leader Manikam Tagore said the central government’s refusal to conduct a caste census was like a betrayal of the OBC community.
He wrote on Twitter: “He ignored the voices demanding justice and deprived our people of representation.” Manikam Tagore also said, will the RSS, JDU and TDP stand with the people or remain silent?
