Another encounter during a Sultanpur robbery has sparked fresh controversy. Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav claimed police clashed over caste issues. In a sarcastic tone, the father of Anuj Pratap Singh, who was killed in the clashes, said the police had settled scores over the recent clashes.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath patted the police and said they would bear the brunt, while former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said Anuj Pratap Anuj Pratap Singh’s experience was fake and said it was unfair to his family.
On August 28, 2024, a robbery occurred at a gold and silver dealer in Thatheri market in Nagar Kotwali police station area of Sultanpur. According to police, the investigation revealed the names of 12 people involved in the crime. So far, two accused have been killed in police encounters and three are absconding. The rest have been arrested, three of whom were shot in the legs during the encounter – a large amount of loot has been seized throughout the case, including 2.6 kilograms of gold and a total of 30 kilograms of silver jewellery.
Anuj’s case controversy takes new turn
While Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the police for the encounter, Samajwadi Party leaders called it another kind of injustice. Yogi Adityanath accused criminals of running a parallel government in the state before 2017.

After the Anuj Pratap encounter, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that in the new Uttar Pradesh of new India, no one can weaken the security of businessmen… If anyone does so, he Will have to bear the consequences.
Amid political accusations and counter-allegations came a statement from the father of the deceased Anuj Pratap Singh. Anuj Singh, a resident of Amethi, was killed by STF in Unnao. Anuj’s father Dharamraj Singh started crying after talking about the political feud in UP. It is said, “Akhilesh Yadav’s wish has come true…and now Thakur has met him too.”
This is another fake encounter
People always have questions about their encounters with the police. Police officers have also been punished in numerous incidents of fake encounters. Questions have also been raised during the judicial inquiry into the Bengaluru encounter, with the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister suggesting that the Uttar Pradesh police take advice on the Karnataka police operation.
The UP STF’s new move will add to chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s problems. After the Mangesh Yadav encounter, in which the Uttar Pradesh Police was accused of conducting the encounter on the basis of caste, the Uttar Pradesh Police, through its new operation, has further clarified the issues that arose. Uttar Pradesh police appears to be taking on charges of caste-based fake encounters with its new operation.
Now it appears that the UP Police’s special task force was actually conducting caste-based encounters. Let us also accept that Mangesh Yadav and Anuj Pratap Singh are both career criminals but police have no right to punish anyone with government guns and bullets. The job of the police is to punish the criminal, not to kill him in an encounter as per his wishes.
Could it be that to balance out what happened to Yadav, who was accused of robbery, one Thakur was also killed – not only is it legally possible, but socially and politically this behavior of the police is also incorrect. It now seems completely clear that this was yet another fake encounter by the UP police.
