Court condemns Uttar Pradesh government
Recently, the Supreme Court reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh government while hearing a case related to the bulldozing operation. The court fined the government Rs 25 lakh. The court said any action involving private property should be conducted in accordance with due legal procedures.
What did the Supreme Court say?
The court said, how could we start demolishing other people’s houses like this? This is chaos. The CJI asked the state government lawyer, how many houses have been demolished? Justice JB Pardiwala told the Uttar Pradesh government lawyer that last night your officers destroyed the yellow-marked area for road widening and the next morning you came with bulldozers. Like a takeover, you don’t bring a bulldozer to tear the house down or even give the family time to vacate the house. The expansion is just an excuse, it doesn’t seem to be the reason for the entire exercise.
This decision of the Supreme Court was termed as incomplete justice by the Muslim Personal Law Board. Spokesperson of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Dr Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas said that if the court considers that the action was taken against a person of a certain community, then a compensation of just Rs 25 lakh is not enough. Action should also be taken against those who do so.
