Pakistan’s wish to join the BRICS seems to have not been realized yet. Russia, the current chair of the BRICS, rejected Pakistan’s application to join the organization. Russia said that the member states have not yet reached a consensus on Pakistan’s application. Like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, China also wanted to pressure Pakistan to include it in the BRICS, but it also failed.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, who has arrived in Pakistan on a two-day visit ahead of the BRICS summit in October, said on Wednesday while addressing the press in Islamabad during his visit that no consensus had been reached on Pakistan’s application.

“We are happy that Pakistan has made an application. BRICS and SCO are brotherly organizations that support each other, but at the same time such decisions require the consent of all members. We see a significant expansion of the BRICS.

According to the Economic Times, sources said that China supports Pakistan’s joining the BRICS, but Pakistan does not fall into the category of emerging economies which is the primary criterion for joining the BRICS.

Sources said Pakistan, as an emerging economy, does not belong to the category of top and emerging economies.

The BRICS partnership mechanism will be decided at the BRICS summit to be held in Kazan, Russia from October 22 to 24.

Pakistan joined the SCO only under pressure from China.

Pakistan was able to join the SCO under pressure from China, a founding member of the SCO. At the same time, Russia put pressure on India to join the SCO. India also received support from two Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, to join the organization. However, the admission criteria of the BRICS and the SCO are different.

Moreover, unlike the SCO, India is a founding member of BRICS and its views are very important for the further expansion of BRICS.

The BRICS (then BRICS) was founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China on June 16, 2009. In September 2010, the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting included South Africa in the organization, which was later called BRICS.

At the BRICS summit held in South Africa last year, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia and Argentina joined the BRICS, bringing the total number of BRICS members to 11. Later, after the election of a new president, Argentina withdrew from the BRICS, and the total number of BRICS members currently stands at 10.
