Members of the opposition parties have issued a notice of impeachment against Allahabad High Court judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav in the Union House. A few days ago, Shekhar Yadav made a controversial statement about Muslims, following which there were calls for his removal from the bench.

News agency PTI quoted sources as saying that 55 opposition legislators have issued a notice to impeach Yadav. Opposition MPs said if the allegations against him are proven, then appropriate action should be taken to remove Chairman Justice Yadav from office.

Who gave the notice?

These include Kapil Sibal, Vivek Tankha, Digvijay Singh of the Congress Party, John Bree of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) John Brittas, Manoj Kumar Jha of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Saket Gokhale of the Trinamool Congress. The lawmakers met with the Secretary-General of the House of Federation and issued the notice of impeachment minutes before the proceedings of the House of Representatives began.

Other MPs who signed the notification include P Chidambaram, Randeep Surjewala, Pramod Tiwari, Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, Naseer Hussain, Raghav Chadha, Fauzia Khan, Sanjay Singh, A. A. Now, there is V Shivdasan and Renuka Chaudhary. The notice was filed under the Judges (Inquiry) Act 1968 and Section 218 of the Constitution.

The whole incident – what was said in the speech

The notification stated that the speech delivered by Justice Yadav at an event organized by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) violated the Indian Constitution, spread hatred and incited communal hatred. Additionally, it talks about bias against and against minorities.

Justice Yadav reportedly said at an event organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on December 8 that the main objective of the Uniform Civil Code is to promote social harmony, gender equality and secularism. Justice Yadav also emphasized this in his speech – the state will act in accordance with the wishes of the majority.
