Why was the hanging postponed for a day?
Subsequently, Afzal Guru, the mastermind of the attack, was sentenced to death on February 9, 2013. Although Afzal was scheduled to be hanged one day earlier, the then UPA government had to move the date forward one day. The then Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde recounted the entire incident step by step in his autobiography. Shinde wrote in his autobiography “Five Decades in Politics” published by HarperCollins that Afzal Guru’s hanging was earlier scheduled for February 8, 2013, but later had to be postponed by a day.
Sushil Kumar Shinde writes that the government believes news of Afzal’s hanging could escalate tensions in Jammu and Kashmir. Law and order challenges may arise and the hanging will have to be postponed for a day. He wrote: “On the day Afzal Guru was hanged, we were very careful not to let the media hear the news. Additionally, arrangements were made to ensure that Afzal Guru was hanged The situation in Jammu and Kashmir will not worsen after death.
How would hangings happen without an executioner?
Shinde further wrote: “In order to maintain confidentiality, the Home Ministry convened a high-level meeting on the morning of February 8, with Tihar Jail Director General Vimala Mehra, then Home Secretary RK Singh RK Singh, Tihar jail warden Sunil Gupta Attended the meeting. I asked them again and again if they were sure about hanging. The problem was that there was no permanent executioner in Tihar jail. After that, we decided to move on. Afzal Guru was hanged by an official of the Tihar Jail Administration on Sunday.
What was Afzal’s last wish?
On February 9, 2013, when it was decided to secretly hang Afzal in Tihar jail, Afzal asked for the Quran in his last wish, which was provided to him. Thereafter, he was hanged at the appointed time.
Shinde wrote that Afzal had exhausted all his legal rights, so he had no choice but to be hanged. Still, he regretted that Afzal’s family could not see him at the last minute because of delays in notifying the family from the home secretary’s office.
