Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.
When the Congress accused Home Minister Amit Shah of insulting Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, Shah also hit back hard at the Congress. Home Minister Amit Shah said my statement was distorted. He alleged that the Congress deliberately defeated Ambedkar in both elections. Congress has made special efforts to do this.
Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar suffered defeat in both Lok Sabha elections. Both times he was defeated by Congress candidates. In particular, the then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru opposed Ambedkar in both elections. In fact, there were ideological differences between the Congress and Ambedkar from the beginning, and these differences came to the fore from time to time. To understand why this is the case, we have to look back at history.
After all, what was the relationship like between Ambedkar and the Congress?
The first confrontation between the Congress and Ambedkar took place in 1930 during the Round Table Conference. In fact, Baba Saheb demanded a separate electorate for Dalits, arguing that separate representation was needed to empower Dalits politically, while Gandhi opposed it. Gandhi’s argument was that this would divide Hindu society. In September 1932, Gandhi launched a death strike for this purpose. This was followed by the signing of the Treaty of Poona, which provided for reserved seats rather than separate electorates.
trying to stay away from the constitutional convention
Senior Tamil Nadu BJP leader Dr Achi V Hande claimed in his book that there were attempts to keep Baba Saheb away from the Constituent Assembly. According to Ambedkar and the making of the Indian Constitution, Ambedkar could not find a place among the 296 members initially sent to the Constituent Assembly. It is said that Ambedkar could not get the support of the Bombay Scheduled Castes Association due to the influence of the Congress at that time. The then CM BG Kher was also accused of trying to do the same. Later, Bengali Dalit leader Jogendranath Mandal came to Ambedkar’s aid. Later he entered the Constituent Assembly with the help of the Muslim League.
This is how members of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan became
Ambedkar’s votes to enter the Constituent Assembly became part of East Pakistan and thus he became a member of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan. Thereafter, his membership of the Constituent Assembly of India was revoked. After this, Ambedkar threatened that he would make it a political issue. Meanwhile, Mr. Jayaka, the MP from Bombay, resigned and the Congress replaced him in the Constituent Assembly with Ambedkar.
Became a minister in Nehru’s interim government and later resigned
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was the Home Minister in the Jawaharlal Nehru government. However, on September 27, 1951, he resigned from his post. The reason for this was the ideological divide created by the Hindu Code Bill. In fact, Ambedkar was a supporter of the Hindu Code Act, which provided for equal rights for women in matters of property, marriage and divorce. The bill failed to pass parliament. Ambedkar was very disappointed by this. Apart from this, he feels that Congress does not take Dalit rights seriously. Thereafter, he started organizing the Scheduled Castes and formed an organization called the Scheduled Castes Federation.
Nehru had launched a campaign against Ambedkar
The election comes just a year after Congress withdrew from internal government. Baba Saheb is contesting from the North Central constituency. Congress candidate Kajlokar won the election. Apart from this, he also participated in the 1954 by-election from Bhandara constituency in Bombay. Here too he lost to the Congress candidate. He thereafter stayed away from active politics. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also opposed him in both elections.
