Who is Meva Singh who will contest against CM Nayab Singh Saini? Congress has made him a candidate from Ladwa

This time a fierce multi-cornered contest is expected in Kurukshetra’s Ladwa assembly constituency. Congress MLA Meva Singh represents this seat. The Grand Old Party has once again fielded him as its candidate from Ladwa. BJP has fielded Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini from Ladwa. INLD has given ticket to former MLA Sher Singh Badshami from here. The JJP-ASP alliance may field JJP’s Kurukshetra senior vice-president Ranjeet Nain from this seat.

Choudhary Mewa Singh’s political journey

Mewa Singh started his political career by becoming the Sarpanch of his village council in 1985-86 and later became a Zila Parishad member and held the post of Kurukshetra Zila Parishad President on behalf of INLD. Ladwa constituency was carved out of Thanesar constituency of Kurukshetra and the first election was held in 2009. Mewa Singh contested his first assembly election on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket and got more than 22500 votes. He joined Congress in 2011. INLD’s Sher Singh Badshami won this seat in the 2009 elections.

After being convicted in the JBT scam along with former Chief Ministers Om Prakash Chautala and Ajay Chautala, his wife Bachan Kaur contested the 2014 election from this seat and failed. Later his daughter-in-law had to taste defeat in 2019. The Badshami family has been the face of INLD in Ladwa. In the 2014 election, Pawan Saini of BJP defeated Bachan Kaur Badshami from Ladwa seat by a close margin of 3000 votes. In 2019, Meva Singh of Congress defeated Pawan Saini by about 12000 votes.

Ladwa became the hot seat of this election

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had performed well in the Ladwa assembly constituency. The constituency, which falls under the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha seat, saw BJP’s Naveen Jindal getting 66,045 votes while India Block candidate Sushli Gupta got 57,295 votes. Unlike many other assembly constituencies where the BJP and Congress are in a direct fight, the Ladwa constituency is expected to witness a multi-cornered contest. For regional parties, the reputation of the candidates will play a key role. The sitting MLA belongs to the Congress while INLD’s Badshahmi has a strong hold in the area. The BJP has made it one of the hottest seats in the assembly elections by fielding Chief Minister Nayab Saini from Ladwa.

Caste equation on Ladwa seat

Caste equations will also play a big role in the elections of Ladwa. There are a good number of Saini and Jat community voters in Ladwa seat. There are about 30 thousand Jat and 36000 Saini community voters. Apart from this, there are also 20 thousand Harijan, 20 thousand Kashyap, about 15 thousand Valmiki and 9200 Jat Sikh voters. BJP feels that by fielding Naib Singh Saini from Ladwa, Saini community may lean towards BJP and the party may benefit from it. Naib Singh Saini is considered to have a strong hold in Jatland. He is an OBC leader. BJP feels that apart from the Saini community, Naib Singh will also get some Jat votes. Apart from this, voters of other communities will also vote for him. On the other hand, Congress is trying to woo Jat voters through Chaudhary Mewa Singh.
