Who is Waqar Uz Zaman?

Lieutenant General Waqar uz Zaman was recently promoted and appointed Army General. He was elected Chief of Army Staff on 11 June 2024 and assumed charge on 23 June 2024. He has been made the Army Chief for the next three years from June 23. Before this, he had been the Chief of General Staff since January 1, 2024.

He had replaced General SM Saifuddin Ahmed. He was appointed as an Infantry Corps officer in the year 1985 and has served in many positions till becoming the Army Chief. Before this, he had also commanded an infantry battalion and an infantry division. He is an alumnus of the Bangladesh Defense Services Command and Staff College and the Joint Services Command and Staff College, United Kingdom.

He has also been Military Secretary at Army Headquarters. He is married to Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman and has two daughters, Samiha Raisa Zaman and Shayeera Ibnat Zaman.
