Bru-Leon Community
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the remote Burha Pada village in Tripura on Sunday, December 22. During this time, he got to know people from the Bru-Reang community. Shah told the community, I am happier than you. The Bru-Reang community is one of the tribes in the northeastern Tripura state. These can be found throughout the state. Apart from this, these people also live in Assam and Mizoram.
They speak a Leon dialect, similar to Kok Borok, a language with Tibeto-Burman roots known locally as Kau Bru. The Leon people are a semi-nomadic people who cultivate their mountainous lands through slash-and-burn or shifting cultivation. This forced them to change locations after a few years.
Bru-Reang community is called Reang
The Bru-Reang community is known as Reang in the Constitution of India. The Reang community consists of 12 clans: Molsoi, Tuimui, Masha, Toumayacho, Apato, Warem, Meska, Raikchak, Chorkhi, Chongpreng, Naukham and Yakstam. According to Part 17 of the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, the Leon tribe is a sub-tribe of the Kuki tribe and one of the Scheduled Tribes of Mizoram. The Bru language belongs to the Bodo language family. This resulted in the designation of Tripura Bru/Reang as a separate tribe under Article 16 (Scheduled Tribes) of Part XV of the Constitution.
