According to the BBC report, which quoted Dr. Rajendra Patoria’s book “Netaji Subhash”, Subhash Chandra Bose was invited by Rash Behari Bose, the founder of Azad Hind Fauj who lived in Japan, during his stay in Germany. On July 4, 1943, Rash Behari Bose handed over the command of Azad Hind Fauj to Subhash Chandra Bose in a ceremony held at Cathay Bhawan, Singapore.

Thereafter, Subhash Chandra Bose, as the supreme commander of the Free Indian Army, formed the provisional government of independent India in Singapore on October 21, 1943. This has also been recognized by nine countries including Germany, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, China, Italy, and Ireland. Its purpose was to fight the British during World War II. Japan gave Azad Hind Fauj a lot of support and people living abroad also joined the army.

Azad Hind Fauj first hoisted the flag in the country in 1944
On March 19, 1944, members of the Azad Hind Fauj hoisted the national flag for the first time in the country. Colonel Shaukat Malik hoisted the national flag at Mairang with the help of some Manipuri and Azad Shinde comrades. On July 6, 1944, he clarified his position in a broadcast to Gandhi on Radio Rangoon and asked for his help.
