November 8, 2024: Tragedy on the set of the iconic TV series Tipu Sultan’s Sword It remains one of the darkest moments in Indian television history. On February 8, 1989, a devastating fire broke out at Premier Studios in Mysore, where the show was shot. Actor-director Sanjay Khan, who played Tipu Sultan in the series, was seriously injured and underwent 73 surgeries and months of recovery.

Actor-writer Ananth Mahadevan, who plays Pandit Purnaiya in the show, recently narrated this in a conversation with Siddharth Kannan A tragic event. Recalling the series of bizarre events that almost prevented him from reaching the studio, Mahadevan said: “It felt like there was something ominous about it. My taxi broke down multiple times along the way and I had a strange feeling of being warned not to go. ”

When he finally arrived, Sanjay Khan was directing a Diwali scene on a set filled with hay, low ceilings and flammable materials. Mahadevan recalls expressing his concerns and hinting that they could have shot the scene in Mumbai. A few hours later, when Mahadevan returned to the hotel, he received news of the fire. “There was a fire on the set,” he was told. He rushed back to find a horrific scene – bodies piled high and fire engines battling the flames.

“It was the most painful night of my life,” Mahadevan recalled. “People didn’t know if we were dead or alive. We had to inform our families that we survived.” The tragedy claimed the lives of 52 crew members, with Sanjay Khan suffering third-degree burns over 65 percent of his body.

Mahadevan spoke of the immense courage shown by Sanjay Khan, who rose like a phoenix from tragedy. After months of recovery, Sanjay returned to complete the series, overcoming physical and mental trauma. “He was burned from top to bottom, including his face, but he came back and finished what he started. It was one of the bravest things I’ve ever seen,” Mahadevan said.
