Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi participated in the Independence Day celebrations organized at the Red Fort on Thursday. During this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the countrymen. This was the first time in recent years that a leader of the Opposition participated in the event. This post was lying vacant since 2014 due to lack of adequate representation of opposition parties in the Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi was seen in traditional white kurta. Passing through the red carpet at the Red Fort, he reached the place (fifth row) where the seat was reserved for him. The players participating in the Olympics were sitting next to him. Lalit Upadhyay, a member of the Indian hockey team that won the bronze medal in the Olympics, was sitting right next to Rahul. Apart from this, Chief Justice Justice DY Chandrachud and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla were present in the front row.

Leader of opposition joined after 10 years

The post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha remained vacant from 2014 to 2024. This was because during that period no opposition party had enough MPs to qualify for the post. However, after the number of seats of the Congress Party reached 99 in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi was appointed the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha on June 25, 2024.
