WhatsApp for Android may be working on a new feature that will let users choose a default theme for chats and chat bubbles from multiple design styles, according to feature trackers. The feature will allegedly offer users multiple design options through a new user interface (UI), potentially expanding customization options on the instant messaging platform. The development comes amid reports of another WhatsApp feature in development that could let users mention others in their status updates.

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the messaging client is working on this feature for release in a future version of the app. The feature was spotted in WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.20.12. Once rolled out, users may be able to pick their preferred option from a variety of design styles.

As shown in the screenshot (above), the colors of the chat bubbles and wallpapers will automatically adjust to match the selected theme. The feature tracker claims that users will also be able to select wallpaper colors independent of the chat bubbles, allowing for further fine-tuning of the customization.
WhatsApp for Android is said to offer the option to choose from multiple themes in its settings. The option will be applied to all conversations by default, but users will still have the option to manually override a specific chat.
Notably, the ability to select a default theme was first spotted on the feature tracker on WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.24.17.19.
WABetaInfo claims that the new feature of selecting a default theme from the options is still under development and is not available even to beta testers registered through the Google Play Beta program. However, it is worth noting that while the instant messaging platform may be developing some new features for various platforms, not all of them will be released publicly.
