In India, giving someone money to be murdered is often called “supari”. The term is often used in contract killing. But with the development of technology, this criminal method has also become modern. Today, such crimes are being committed using the dark web and cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

Recently, a similar case became a topic of discussion on social media, in which a woman hired a cyber hitman through the dark web and gave him a Bitcoin contract.

This is an American problem

This case comes from Knoxville, USA. A 48-year-old woman named Melody Sasser was having an affair with a married man. After this, a hitman is hired to take his wife off the road. In 2023, Sasser donated a betel nut worth approximately 1 million rupees ($10,000) in Bitcoin on the dark web.

How did it come to light?

The woman used the darknet platform “Online Killer Market” and her identity is expected to be hidden. But police were able to track him because of his restlessness and constant messaging with the killer. Police found a diary and many other incriminating documents from the woman’s home, and Sasser was subsequently sentenced to 100 months (about eight years) in prison.

Darknet and online killer market games

Online killer markets are part of the dark web where killers can be hired to murder someone. The dark web is a part of the internet where users’ identities remain hidden and cryptocurrencies are used for illegal activities. However, what is clear from this case is that despite attempts to hide in digital technology, the noose of the law can tighten around criminals.
