A different side of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was seen on Thursday, when she offered to resign “for the sake of the people”. She said that she also wants justice for the doctor of RG Kar Hospital who was murdered.

Addressing a press conference, Banerjee said, “I apologise to the people of Bengal who were hoping that the RG deadlock would end today. They (junior doctors) came to Nabanna but did not attend the meeting. I request them to go back to work. I am ready to resign for the sake of the people because despite my best intentions and efforts in the last three days, the doctors refused to negotiate.”

Mamta’s different style
Yesterday, West Bengal saw a different face and style of Mamata Banerjee. Known for her fiery style, Mamata Banerjee was seen very soft, emotional and with folded hands yesterday. This style, this face and this body language was never seen in the last 13 years.

One thing is certain that the movement going on after the RG Kar Hospital incident has had a huge impact on Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee has never been seen under so much pressure in the last 13 years. For the first time, apart from political parties, a crowd of junior doctors and spontaneous people is seen on the streets.

Differences in the party

Internal differences have started within the party as well. Rajya Sabha MP Jawahar Sarkar has resigned. Another MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy has turned rebel and differences have also cropped up with Abhishek Banerjee. While Mamata is facing internal pressure from within the party, she is also facing pressure from outside due to the agitation of non-political organizations. Apart from these reasons, the reason behind the resignation offer is also to create emotional pressure, which only a true politician like Mamata can do.

Why did the matter reach an apology

In fact, there are continuous protests in Bengal regarding the rape and murder of a doctor of Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital and Medical College. Since this incident, the doctors are on strike. A meeting was to be held between the doctors and the Mamata government on Thursday but it could not happen. Mamata Banerjee waited for two hours for the meeting to be held in the conference hall of Nabanna, but the doctors were adamant about live streaming of the talks and refused to go to the conference hall. After this, the meeting was cancelled late in the evening.

After waiting for about two hours, Mamata Banerjee held a press conference and said that she also wants the victim to get justice and apologized to the people of West Bengal for the deadlock continuing.

‘I don’t want the CM’s chair’

The CM said that when the matter is sub judice, we cannot discuss the minute details of the case like this. That is why we had the facility to record the proceedings. I had decided that we will pass a resolution in memory of the deceased victim and Sitaram Yechury who left us today. We also want justice but the case is no longer with us but with the CBI. We also think about live telecast with an open mind but there are some legal constraints as the case is sub judice.

He said that I am ready to leave the chair for the sake of justice for the common people, but they do not want justice, they just want the chair. I do not want the CM’s chair, but I want justice for the victim.
