A parliamentary standing committee will consider the issue of the age of marriage for men and women next week. The Standing Committee will discuss the matter on November 22. The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was first introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2021. The bill was then sent to the Standing Committee. The committee was enlarged several times but the act lapsed with the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha.
In this meeting, the Committee will be attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD), representatives of the National Alliance (NCAAAC) and the Youth Voice Movement.

The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021 seeks to amend the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 to increase the minimum age of marriage for girls to 21 years.

The 2006 Act provides that a person married below the minimum age has the right to apply for an annulment before the age of 20 (i.e. within two years of coming of age). The bill calls for raising the age to 23, which is 5 years old.
