There is a special auction for donated hair.

According to India Today, the Tirupati Balaji Temple collected around Rs 639 crore from the monthly auction of hair donated by devotees in 2018. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Trust (TTD) organises the auction on the first Thursday of every year.

These are different types of hair

Data shows that in 2018, about 187,000 kg of hair of all kinds were sold. Of this, 10,000 kg of hair was of the best quality, and the price of these 600 kg of hair was Rs 22,494 per kg. The total revenue reached Rs 135 crore.

The quantity of hair of the lower category (i.e. Category 2) was about 46,100 kg and its price was Rs 17,223 per kg. A total of 2400 kg of hair was sold in this category, earning Rs 41.3 crore.

Now if we talk about the third category or rather the third category, there were 30,300 kg of hair in stock and the price was Rs 2833 per kg. 500 kg of hair was sold and Rs 14.17 lakh was earned.

200 kg of No. 4 wool was sold at Rs 1,195 per kg, earning Rs 2.39 lakh.

Similarly, 1.93 lakh kg of fifth grade hair was sold at Rs 24 per kg, earning Rs 46.32 lakh.

Even 6,900 kg of grey hair was sold at Rs 5,462 per kg, earning Rs 27.31 lakh.

The donated hair has been cleaned

Every year, believers from all over the world come here to donate about 500 to 600 tons of hair. According to this process, the donated hair must be boiled, washed, dried and then sent to a large warehouse for storage.

Before this auction is conducted by the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam Trust (TTD), the hair is classified into different categories. After that, 5 categories of hair are prepared based on the length, which includes hair ranging from 5 inches to 31 inches. Every year, the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam Trust (TTD) earns a good income from this auction.
