The Supreme Court has given its highest verdict on the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University. In its decision, the court upheld AMU’s minority status. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, while delivering the judgment, said it was a unanimous opinion of four judges. The three judges had different opinions. The court also said that minority status will now be decided by a new bench of three judges.
The Supreme Court, by a 4-3 majority, overturned the 1967 ruling that had become the basis for denying AMU minority status. The 1967 decision said the AMU could not be considered a minority institution as it was created under a central law. The 1967 judgment has now been quashed by the Supreme Court. However, a new bench of 3 judges will be constituted and will decide the minority status of the university on terms and conditions.
There is a lot of happiness among people
After the Supreme Court’s decision was announced, there was an atmosphere of happiness among students, teachers and people related to the school. People distribute sweets on this festival. There was a wave of happiness in the Muslim society, which will be recorded in history today in gold letters.
On this day, people in the university are celebrating, giving out sweets, people hugging each other and congratulating each other. Meanwhile, a member of staff at the university said: “We are eagerly awaiting the decision and we are very pleased with it.” At the same time, others say, we get a lot of joy out of the Supreme Court. Teachers’ associations welcomed the decision
The decision was welcomed by the Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association (AMUTA). The teachers’ association said it wholeheartedly welcomes the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University. This historic decision reaffirms the identity of the university as it embraces its objective of providing complete education to the Muslim community through inclusion of all sections of society.
The teachers’ association said we expect minority cases to be resolved soon as per the norms laid down by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. We have full confidence in our country’s judiciary and constitution.
