The death toll in the landslide after heavy rains in Wayanad, Kerala has reached close to 256. After nature wreaked havoc on Wayanad on Monday, the strong flow of water from the hill top changed the flow direction of the small Iruvazhinji river, drowning everything on its banks. Where earlier greenery was visible, now only debris is visible. Before the landslide, the river was flowing in a straight line and villages were settled on the banks but now the river has covered the entire area.
Rescue operation attempted today in Attamala, Mundakai and Churalmala.
The situation has become so serious that even after 3 days the rescue operation has not been completed. After the landslide, four entire villages in Wayanad have been wiped out. Amidst heavy rains, rescue operations are facing difficulties due to mud, rocks and large pieces of trees. It is expected that by today afternoon the 190 feet bridge between Churalmala and Mundakkai will be ready. Rescue operations are being attempted today to rescue people trapped in Attamala, Mundakai and Churalmala, but the weather may hamper it.
Heavy rain in 9 districts including Wayanad even today
The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert in Kerala even today, even this trend of rain is going to continue till August 4. There are total 14 districts in Kerala. Out of which there is an alert of heavy rain in 9 districts. At the same time, there may be light to moderate rain in 6 districts. Talking about the affected district Wayanad, there is a high possibility of heavy rain here today. IMD has issued a yellow alert for this. Apart from this, there is a possibility of heavy rain in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram of North Kerala and Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki districts of Central Kerala.
Rain will continue till August 4
There is a possibility of light to moderate rain in Kottayam and southern Kerala districts of Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram today. This series of rains will be seen in Kerala till August 4. There will be heavy rain in Wayanad today and tomorrow i.e. till 2nd August. After this, there may be light to moderate rain for the next three days. Due to continuous rain, the rescue operation is being affected. Let us tell you that due to bad weather, flights in Kerala are also affected, hence Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also had to cancel their plans to visit the landslide affected areas on Wednesday.
