Wayanad landslide: 289 deaths so far, Army built bridge in 16 hours to speed up relief operation

After the horrific disaster in Wayanad, Kerala, the Indian Army has taken command of relief and rescue operations. On Thursday, soldiers completed the construction of a bailey bridge over a river near the landslide site in record time. In the video surfaced from Wayanad, army soldiers are seen raising slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.

The construction of Bailey Bridge in Wayanad by the Indian Army has been completed. To test the strength of the bridge, the army first moved its vehicles to the other side of the river. After the completion of the work, the army personnel involved in the construction raised slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. With the construction of the bridge, heavy vehicles can now be taken to the landslide site.

The Indian Army has completed the construction of this bridge in record time. CL 24 Bailey Bridge connects Churalamala to Mundakkai over the Iruvanipazha River. This bridge has opened for traffic and has been handed over to the civic administration.

A vehicle weighing 24 tonnes can be transported through this bridge. Army told that this bridge is 190 feet long. According to tradition the commander went to the bridge first. Army soldiers raised slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ after successfully completing the construction of the bailey bridge at the Wayanad landslide site within 16 hours.

289 people have died so far

The landslide in Wayanad, Kerala has shaken the entire country. Four villages have been completely destroyed due to landslides and so far 289 people are reported to have died. Congress leader and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and his sister and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached Kerala on Thursday and met the families of the victims.

Heavy rains became a disaster in Wayanad on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday. Landslides occurred three times between 1 am and 5 am and caused devastation in four beautiful villages, Churalamala, Attamala, Noolpuzha and Mundakkai, situated in the catchment of the Cheliyar river below the mountain.
