In today’s era, the “green” revolution is spreading throughout the world. The government in the country’s capital, Delhi, has also proposed a modernization plan to eliminate the ever-increasing mountains of garbage. Under the plan, plans were drawn up to generate electricity by burning waste. The Timarpur-Okhla waste-to-energy plant was built to eliminate the mountains of waste. However, now the Green Revolution plan itself has brought dangerous results to ordinary people. Reports suggest that one million people in Delhi were suffocated by smoke from waste-to-energy projects. The scheme not only provides electricity to people but also provides cover against serious illnesses.
Hazardous chemicals discharged from factories
In published reports, it has been claimed that ash and smoke emitted from the Okhla waste-to-energy plant in Timalpur contain arsenic, lead, cadmium and many other deadly chemicals. This chemical is very dangerous to people’s health. Reports also show that people living in settlements around the plant are exposed to toxic particles on a daily basis and suffer from respiratory problems, asthma, cancer and skin-related illnesses.
Increased cases of asthma, cancer and skin diseases
It is understood that cases of asthma, cancer and skin diseases have increased significantly among residents living in areas surrounding the Okhla waste-to-energy plant in Delhi’s Timalpur. People of all ages, from children to the elderly, fall victim to these diseases. According to reports, the report submitted by the government also agrees that chemicals released from the Okhla waste-to-energy plant in Timalpur are harmful to health.
Children’s Park in Ashes
Not only this, the ash generated by the Okhla waste-to-energy plant in Timalpur is also thrown into open spaces near settlements. Since then, parks have been built on the ashes for children to play. Now, respiratory diseases in children are increasing due to open ash spreading. Deadly metals present in volcanic ash negatively impact children’s development. The Delhi Pollution Control Board and other agencies failed to regulate the plant.
