Vir Das reacts to Samay Raina’s ‘India’s Got Latent Row’: ‘Consequences of your comedy on your career…’

The controversy surrounding the comedy scenario in India has been intensifying with every passing day. The recent ‘India’s Got Latent’ row can be cited as one of the prime reasons for it. Various reactions of artists and audiences from different walks of life are coming in. Comedian-actor Vir Das, who once faced legal trouble over his “Two Indias” monologue has also joined the bandwagon.
Weighed in on the India’s Got Latent controversy which includes Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Ashish Chanchlani, Vir Das in his social media story mentioned – “The audience is always welcome to debate what good comedy is. A good artist will take their feedback head down, mouth shut, and maybe evolve. Either way the consequences of your comedy on your career and audience are pretty instant. That’s a natural process.”
“But we are also watching a bunch of irrelevant mainstream media anchors bordering extinction coming together to take down new media that gets millions more views, longer interviews, and far more impact than their bloated studios and fat salary at 1 percent of the cost. Whether you like the new media or not is irrelevant,” he continued in his story
“That’s also what’s happening here. And while they debate what good comedy is, please debate what good journalism is, and the news that they should be doing, the questions they should be asking, and who they should be asking them to,” Vir Das said.
For the unversed, on February 10, Guwahati Police registered an FIR against Samay Raina and all guest panelists for his recently aired ‘India’s Got Latent’ episode for “promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit discussions”.
Further, the Maharashtra Cyber Department has filed an FIR against the above-stated names to other almost 30 guests who came on the show since its first episode.
Amid all this, during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske raised the issue and called for stricter regulations to monitor the content shared on social media platforms.
