Describing the National Education Policy (NEP) as a ‘game changer’, Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has appealed to the states that have not yet adopted it. He said that the NEP gives importance to all languages ​​and gives the youth of the country an opportunity to make full use of their talent. Speaking at an event organized in New Delhi on the occasion of International Literacy Day on Sunday, Dhankhar said, “Education is a treasure that no one can take away.” He called upon everyone to pledge to make at least one person literate.

Actually, the central government had come up with a new education policy in 2020, under which some major changes have been proposed in the 800-page draft of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). There are four stages of school education. These include 5 (Foundational) + 3 (Preparatory) + 3 (Middle) + 4 (Secondary) stages. In the draft released, many major changes have been proposed in India, such as how children will study from class 1 to 12, what they will learn, how they will learn, how the talent of students will be evaluated, etc.

Vice President’s appeal to the states regarding NEP

The Vice President has appealed to those states which have not yet adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) to think again. He emphasized that this policy is a game changer for the country. He said, “This National Education Policy empowers our youth to fully harness their talent and energy, in which all languages ​​have been given due importance.”

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “Education is something that no thief can take away from you. No government can take it away from you. Neither relatives nor friends can take it away from you. It cannot be diminished. It will keep growing and growing as long as you keep sharing it.” He also expressed confidence that if literacy is pursued with passion, India can once again become a centre of learning like Nalanda and Takshila.

Make at least one person literate: Vice President

He said, “When we make someone literate, we help that person to find himself, we give him a sense of dignity, we reduce dependency, we create independence. It enables a person to help himself. It is the best way of hand-holding.” The Vice President emphasized that the joy and happiness you experience by educating a person, be it a man, a woman, a child or a girl, is boundless. “You cannot even imagine how much happiness it will give you. It will be the greatest achievement you can make in human development,” he said.

Importance of Mother Tongue

Speaking on the special importance of mother tongue, Dhankhar said that it is the language in which we dream. Dhankhar stressed on India’s unique linguistic diversity and said, “There is no country like India in the world. When it comes to language richness, we are a unique nation with many languages.” Reflecting on his experiences as Rajya Sabha Chairman, he said, “I give members a chance to speak in 22 languages. When I hear them speaking in their language, I listen to the translation, but their body language itself tells me what they are saying.” He also spoke on the profound importance of ‘Rishi Parampara’ in Indian culture. Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary and Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) Secretary Sanjay Kumar, among other officials, were also present on the occasion.

In which states work is going on on NEP

The new education policy was implemented in Uttarakhand on July 12, 2022. It was the first state in the country to implement the new education policy in primary education under school education. After this, the Madhya Pradesh government implemented the new education policy in the state on August 26, 2021. Last year on September 13, 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government has directed the education department to implement the new education policy. Under this, only 29 hours of study will be done in schools in a week. At the same time, Karnataka has refused to implement the new education policy. State education policy will be implemented in Karnataka.
