Vamana Jayanti 2024: Today is Vaman Jayanti. It is the birth anniversary of the fifth Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Vaman Jayanti is celebrated every year on the Dwadashi day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. How to worship on Vaman Jayanti?
On this day, get up early, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Clean the place of worship and your home. Take a vow of fasting on the day of Vaman Jayanti. This fast is observed to please Lord Vishnu. This fast can be observed by fasting or eating fruits. If a complete fast is not possible, then eat only satvik food in the diet. Worship the Vaman incarnation of Lord Vishnu after this. Offer water, fruits, flowers, incense, lamps, sandalwood, Akshat (rice), Panchamrit, Tulsi Dal and sweets. Meditate on Lord Vaman and then listen to fast stories.
The Story of Vaman Jayanti
According to legend, the powerful demon king Bali defeated Lord Indra and occupied heaven. Although King Bali was the grandson of Prahlad, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and a philanthropic king, he was an arrogant demon. He often abused his power to intimidate and threaten the gods and Brahmans. Bali, who was extremely brave and invincible, became the ruler of heaven and earth by virtue of his strength.
When the heavens fell out of the hands of Lord Indra, he reached Lord Vishnu along with all the gods. Indra Dev narrated his painful experience to Lord Vishnu and requested for help. Lord Vishnu then promised him to get rid of the problem. Thereafter, Lord Vishnu took his fifth incarnation on earth in the form of Vaman.
Lord Vaman went to the King of Bali in the disguise of a dwarf Brahmin and requested him to give him land equivalent to three steps for him to live on. He held a wooden umbrella in his hand. The king agreed to the sacrifice and promised to give him three steps of land.
With the first step, Vaman Dev measured the entire earth. With the second step, he measured Devlok. There was no land left for the third step. But King Bali was true to his word, so he bowed his head for the third time and said that the Lord should take the third step here. Vaman Dev was very happy with King Bali’s promise. So, Vaman Dev decided to send King Bali to the underworld and put his third step on Bali’s head. After this, Bali reached the underworld.
