Sub-inspector arrested for sexually harassing a woman teacher in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh An SI has been arrested over allegations of sexual harassment levelled by a woman teacher, officials said on Friday.

A senior police official said the accused policeman had been suspended from duty, the news agency reported. He was under the influence of alcohol and sexually assaulted the woman. The senior official said the department had also launched an investigation against him.

Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Sanjay Rai said the 30-year-old teacher lived with her daughter in Lalganj and worked in a private school. “On the day of the incident, she was travelling fast to Lalganj when Sub-Inspector Ram Kowal boarded the flight and started harassing her,” the officer said. “When she protested, he threatened the woman.

SI arrested and suspended

An FIR was registered against Ram Kewal after a complaint was filed at Lalganj police station and he was detained on Friday. The officer was posted at Nawabganj police station, said additional SP.

Another police chief said Ram Kowal had undergone a medical examination which confirmed the presence of alcohol in his system, following which district police chief Anil Kumar suspended the accused and ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter.
