It is understood that eight assembly seats in UP require by-elections as the MLAs from these seats became members of the Congress after winning the Lok Sabha elections. However, the ninth seat has fallen vacant following the conviction of Sisamau Samajwadi Party MP Irfan Solanki in a criminal case. The Election Commission has not made any announcement regarding the Mirkipur by-election in Ayodhya as the matter is pending before the courts.
Earlier, the Samajwadi Party announced candidates from Karhal, Sisamau, Phulpur, Katehari, Majhwan and Meerapur. However, the BJP announced candidates for seven seats today.
