More than 50,000 gallons (190,000 liters) of water had to be used to put out a fire in a Tesla Inc semi-electric truck after it caught fire. The information was provided by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which said the incident occurred in California last month.

The truck fire occurred on Interstate 80 west of Lake Tahoe, California. The truck left the road at a curve, hit a tree, and then rushed down the slope and hit several trees. Fortunately, the driver was not seriously injured during this period.

Aircraft were also used to put out the fire.

Firefighters used water and aircraft to spray fire retardant from above as a precaution to control the fire and prevent it from spreading beyond the crash site, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

For example, 50,000 gallons of water is equivalent to a swimming pool that is 50 feet long, 24 feet wide, and 3-8 feet deep. This is much larger than the average home in-ground pool, which is typically 20-40 feet long and 10-20 feet wide, according to Angie’s List. In addition, a typical tanker truck used by a fire department holds 3,000 gallons of water.

The temperature reaches 540 degrees

The Tesla truck, driven by an employee, was reportedly transporting batteries from a warehouse in Livermore, California, to the company’s factory in Sparks, Nevada. The incident closed part of the I-80 freeway for 15 hours. Firefighters reported that the battery temperatures reached 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (540 degrees Celsius) during the fire.

After the fire was under control, Tesla’s mini truck was taken to an open area and observed for 24 hours to ensure that the battery would not catch fire again. In fact, there is a possibility that the lithium-containing battery will catch fire again.
