Union Minister Jitendra Singh has rejected the opposition’s claim that independent MP Engineer Rashid is a ‘proxy’ of the BJP. Jitendra Singh said that the BJP does not need any ‘clutch’ to win the elections. Speaking at the ‘Panchayat Aaj Tak’ program on the banks of the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jitendra Singh said, ‘As a BJP worker, I am happy about this because it means that the opposition has accepted its defeat. Such statements are made in a weak position, not in a strong position.’

The minister’s statement came a day after Engineer Rashid was released from Delhi’s Tihar Jail. The National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party had alleged that Rashid, an independent MP from Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, was released by the BJP-led central government to cut the opposition’s votes in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.

However, in his first comment after coming out of jail, Engineer Rashid rejected the allegations of being a BJP proxy. He said, ‘How can a man who has been a victim of BJP’s politics be a BJP proxy?’

Jitendra Singh asserted that the BJP is capable of winning elections on its own and does not need proxies. He said, ‘When they (the opposition) see that they are losing, they are talking about proxies, B-teams and other things. We do not need proxies. The ‘clutch’ is needed by those who are not capable of winning on their own.’

Talking about the alliance, Jitendra Singh said that ideology is important for the BJP. He said that the BJP voluntarily came out of the alliance with the PDP in 2018. He said, ‘We realized that we were not able to work on a common minimum program based on our ideology, so we decided to come out of the alliance.’
