Umar Khalid gets 7-day interim bail, Karkardooma court grants relief

The court gave major relief to accused Omar Khalid, who was jailed for his alleged role in riots in the capital Delhi. Delhi’s Karkardooma court has granted interim bail to Umar Khalid for seven days. According to sources, Omar Khalid has sought interim bail for 10 days to attend his cousin’s wedding. However, the Karkardooma court granted Umar Khalid interim bail for seven days from December 28 to January 3.

Who is Omar Khalid?

Umar Khalid is an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. Umar Khalid is accused of being the mastermind of the February 2020 Delhi riots. Let us tell you that in 2020, riots broke out in Delhi against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). These riots have resulted in 53 deaths and more than 700 injuries. Delhi Police arrested Khalid in September 2020.

What are the charges against Omar Khalid?

Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid has been charged by the Delhi Police with conspiracy to participate in the Delhi riots. Umar Khalid was arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The Delhi Police also filed supplementary charges against Omar Khalid, including murder, attempted murder, rioting, gathering of people, sedition, and criminal conspiracy.

Communal clashes broke out in northeast Delhi on February 24, 2020, after violence broke out between supporters and opponents of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Since then, Omar has also been interrogated by the Crime Branch and Special Branch of the Delhi Police in connection with the alleged conspiracy behind the riots. Police also confiscated his mobile phone. Umar Khalid was arrested after an 11-hour interrogation. Previously, many of Omar Khalid’s petitions had been rejected.
