Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently on a visit to Mongolia. Putin’s two-day visit has come at a time when the International Criminal Court (ICC) ordered the Mongolian government to arrest him. But ignoring the arrest order, the Mongolian government rolled out the red carpet to welcome Putin.

President Putin was given a grand welcome on his arrival in Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar. He was given a guard of honour. Even the monument of Genghis Khan was painted with the flags of Mongolia and Russia. Mongolia’s Foreign Minister Batmunkh herself reached the airport to receive him.

What was the order of the International Criminal Court?

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Putin in 2023. He has been held responsible for the genocide in Ukraine. Because of this, the International Court ordered the Mongolian government to arrest him.

According to the order of the International Criminal Court, after the arrest warrant is issued by the court, if that person sets foot in any ICC member country, then it becomes the responsibility of that country to arrest him. Due to this, Putin was avoiding visiting any country which is a member of the ICC. He has earlier visited countries like China and North Korea, which are not members of the ICC.
