UK police arrest crossbow attack suspect after family members of journalist killed

UK police on Wednesday announced that a 26-year-old man is in custody following the deaths of the wife and two daughters of a well-known BBC radio commentator in a suspected “targeted” attack involving a crossbow. Kyle Clifford was sought in connection with the murders of three women in Bushey, north of London, on Tuesday night.
The victims were Carol Hunt, wife of BBC radio and Sky Sports racing commentator John Hunt, and their daughters, Louise and Hannah. In a statement on Wednesday, police reported that Clifford, who was found by officers in Enfield, “was known to the victims,” and no other suspects are being sought.
Clifford is “receiving medical treatment after being found with injuries,” UK police said.
Local authorities earlier said that officers were called to a house in the suburban town, where the three women were pronounced dead at the scene. Chief superintendent Jon Simpson described the event as “a horrific incident involving what is currently believed to be a crossbow, but other weapons may also have been used.”
During the police search, a primary school in nearby Enfield kept children indoors.
In the UK, there is no licence required to own a crossbow, but carrying one in public without a reasonable excuse is illegal. Interior minister Yvette Cooper called the deaths “truly shocking” and said she was being kept updated on the investigation.
A spokeswoman for Cooper’s department said that legislation is “under constant review” and noted that a call for evidence was initiated earlier this year to consider whether additional controls on crossbows should be implemented. She added that the minister would “swiftly consider the findings to determine if laws need to be tightened further.”
