Rajouri, September 15: Two days after an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Draba Chamrer area of Poonch district, another encounter broke out in Pathanateer village of Mendhar sub-division.
Official sources said that on Saturday evening, security forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in villages near Patantal and Mendal following suspicious activities.
They said terrorists hiding in the forest opened fire on army and police search and rescue teams on Saturday and Sunday night, which led to retaliation and an exchange of fire.
Official sources further stated that a large number of army and police reinforcements have been sent to the area and the anti-terrorist operation was further intensified on Sunday morning. A new round of firing took place in the morning and gunfire could be heard in the area till the afternoon.
Locals said the firing had stopped since late Sunday afternoon. Officials, on the other hand, said the operation was still going on and troops had cordoned off an area of at least two kilometres.
