Usha Rani was married to Captain Jagtar Singh of the Army’s Educational Corps. There was happiness and peace in their married life for three years. During this time, they were blessed with twin children and their life was going on happily. But the day of 25 December 2020 brought such pain in Usha’s life that her whole world changed.

Her husband died in a train accident. Despite this immense grief, Usha did not lose courage and prepared herself to live with this reality. In this difficult time, Usha completed her Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree and became a teacher in Army Public School and started teaching children.

Along with this, she started preparing for the Services Selection Board (SSB) to join the Indian Army, so that she could follow in the footsteps of her late husband. Coincidentally, Usha reached the same Services Selection Board from where her husband was selected. After this, she joined training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) on her wedding anniversary.

Usha faced many challenges during her training at the academy. She had to stay thousands of miles away from her three-year-old twins and undergo rigorous physical and mental training, which is considered to be the toughest in the world. Her parents fully supported her in this courageous and decisive step.

At the Officers Training Academy, Usha Rani worked very hard to meet the physical standards of a cadet despite being a mother and an elderly woman. The credit for her success goes to her strong will, tireless hard work and never-say-die attitude.

Usha Rani’s story is an inspirational one, which shows that despite any adversity, if a person has courage and passion, he can achieve anything.
