TRAI has come as a big relief to Airtel, Jio, BSNL and Vi, with new message tracking rules to be implemented from today.

TRAI has now extended the deadline for implementation of message traceability rules to December 10, which comes as a big relief to Airtel, Jio, BSNL and Vi. The telecoms regulator has given access service providers another 10 days to complete compliance. Previously, the news traceability rules were originally scheduled to be implemented on November 1st and the deadline was October 31st. But it was later extended to November 30.

What is news source tracing?

The telecom regulator has directed access service providers (ASPs), i.e. telecom operators, to implement traceability to track commercial messages sent in bulk. This is mandatory for tracking fake messages sent in bulk because without a traceability system, there will be no way to trace where the message was sent. In this case, catching the scammer is difficult.

TRAI has now extended the deadline to December 10 for all access service providers to implement the system. After the traceability system is implemented, the person who sent the false message can be easily traced. Earlier, telecom companies had argued to TRAI that there were many technical hurdles in implementing the system and therefore they should be given more time. The regulator has since decided to grant him a one-month extension.

Rules for fake calls and messages

Recently, TRAI made it clear that there will not be any delay in obtaining OTP due to the implementation of the rule. The government has taken several measures over the past few months to curb the growing cybercrime in the country. TRAI has implemented new rules from October 1 to stop fake calls and messages. Under this rule, telemarketing companies that send bulk messages must whitelist themselves. Apart from this, the message template recommended by TRAI must also be followed. Messages without a whitelist will be considered fake and blocked at the network level.
