After reports of delays in net banking and Aadhaar OTP from December 1, TRAI clarified its stance and said users need not panic. Thanks to the new rules, there will be no delay in messages arriving on users’ phones. This is completely false, the telecom regulator said while sharing a viral video on the social media platform using the handle X. TRAI has asked access providers to enforce message traceability. Therefore, there is no delay in message delivery.
Over the past few months, the telecom regulator has taken several steps to curb the growing cybercrime in the country. To stop fake calls and messages, regulators implemented new rules from October 1. Additionally, telecom companies have been given time until November 30 to enforce message traceability. Previously, the deadline for news tracing was October 31, but telecom operators sought time from regulators to implement it, so they received a one-month extension.
What is news source tracing?
The telecom regulator has directed access service providers (i.e. telecom operators) to implement traceability to track commercial messages sent in bulk. This is mandatory for tracking fake messages sent in bulk because without a traceability system, there will be no way to trace where the message was sent. In this case, catching the scammer is difficult.
TRAI has given a deadline to all access service providers to implement the system. After the traceability system is implemented, the person who sent the false message can be easily traced. Telecom companies had argued to TRAI that there were many technical hurdles in implementing the system and therefore they should be given more time. The regulator has since decided to grant him a one-month extension. However, with the implementation of this rule, there will be no delay for anyone to get OTP. The telecoms regulator made this clear in its post today.
