TikTok owner ByteDance sues intern for $1.1 million in AI breaches

ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of social media platform TikTok, is suing a former intern for $1.1 million, accusing him of hacking the company’s artificial intelligence large language model (AI LLM) training infrastructure, Reuters reports, Citing government-owned news portals Legal Weekly Thursday, November 28th.

As the race for artificial intelligence intensifies, the case of the interns against ByteDance has attracted widespread attention in China. The company is reportedly seeking 8 million yuan ($1.1 million) in damages from former intern Tian Keyu, according to a lawsuit filed with Beijing’s Haidian District People’s Court.

Lawsuits between companies and employees are common in China, but this one drew attention after an intern demanded much more money than usual. The case also attracted attention because of its focus on AI LLM training. As generative artificial intelligence advances, the technology is attracting global interest.

ByteDance reportedly declined to comment on the lawsuit on Thursday, and Tian Keyu did not immediately respond to emailed media inquiries.

How much does it cost?

Tian Keyu was once an intern at ByteDance. He was fired in August this year on suspicion of serious disciplinary violations. The Guardian Reported on October 21.

According to media reports, the company claimed that Tian Keyu “maliciously interfered” and undermined the training of artificial intelligence (AI) models through code manipulation and unauthorized modifications.

The company commented on the firing of the intern after rumors spread widely on Chinese social media.

In a social media post in October, the company announced that it had fired the intern in August. ByteDance also said rumors that the case cost the company millions of dollars and more than 8,000 graphics processing units were “grossly exaggerated,” the news agency reported.
