It was a movement led by students who were unhappy with a particular issue. He was angry about reservation in government jobs. But Sheikh Hasina government took strict action against the students, due to which this movement grew bigger. It was motivated entirely by internal reasons.

Reservation in government jobs in Bangladesh was given to the families of those who had played a role in the freedom struggle against Pakistan. Fierce protests had started there against this quota. Sheikh Hasina tried to stop this movement both through strategy and force but both the efforts failed. In the end he accepted all the demands of the protesters, but the protesters were adamant on his resignation. Accepting the demands of the protesters, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post and went to India, she has been in India since then.
