Bollywood star Danny Denzongpa, known for several hit films in the Hindi film industry, has slayed the Indian beer king with his diverse career milestones. Vijay Mallya is widely credited with revolutionizing the Indian beer market. However, the much-loved Bollywood villain has moved beyond Mallya’s empire to create Yuksom Breweries, India’s third largest beer brand.
According to Hindustan Times, the actor ventured into the beer business in 1987 by founding Yuksom Brewery in his hometown of Sikkim. The liquor company is named after his hometown and is run by the actor and his family. The brewery sells three million cases of beer annually.

Danny Denzongpa builds India’s third largest beer brand
In 2005, the actor expanded his beer empire by establishing Denzong Brewery in Odisha. Four years later, he acquired the Rhino Institute of Assam. According to Yuksom’s official website, the brand’s annual production capacity is 680,000 HL. Yuksom is the third largest beer company in India, after Kingfisher and Kimaya.
Other brands with higher output are foreign brands, such as Hogaarden, Budweiser, Carlsberg, etc. In 2009, the Indian beer market expanded significantly. The Northeast is considered the last bastion. Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries has a near-monopoly across India but has yet to make inroads into the seven northeastern states.
According to the Hindustan Times, the liquor tycoon has set his sights on Rhino Agency, a new brewery in Assam. However, Danny hopes his Yuksom can dominate the northeastern market. After hearing about Mallya’s acquisition plan, MSN reported that Danny personally acquired Rhino Agencies and consolidated his position in the market.
United Breweries has never acquired breweries in the Northeast and has avoided further production in that market. As part of Denny’s efforts to promote his hometown, Yuxom hires mostly locals. The Sikkim Express reported in 2022 that breweries in the Northeast employed 250 people and contributed as much as $1 billion to the local economy every year.
