Lee Daniels’ film The Deliverance, which was recently released on Netflix, is in the news these days. The film stars Mo’nique, Andra Day, and Glenn Close in the lead roles. This is a horror movie and is based on a true incident related to the Ammons family. This is the story of a family whose house was allegedly haunted by more than 200 ghosts.

What happened to the Ammons family?

Latoya Ammons moved into a house at 3860 Carolina Street in Gary, Indiana in November 2011 with her mother and three children. According to the family’s claims, they began to see swarms of large black flies on their porch. They did a lot to get rid of the flies but they kept coming back. Things got weird when they heard creaking and walking sounds from the basement.

‘Invisible force strangled him’

Latoya Ammons’ mother, Rosa Campbell, even claimed that she once saw a shadow in the kitchen. Apart from this, an invisible force had strangled her. Even the three children started having scary experiences. At the same time, one child felt that an invisible force picked him up and threw him across the room. As shown in The Deliverance, the Department of Child Services (DCS) found out about the family and did not believe their claims.

‘The child of the house started walking backwards on the wall’

This family’s ghost story even reached the mainstream media. According to Skeptical Inquirer, a DCS employee then claimed that he saw the youngest child of the family walking upside down on the wall. Later, the family met a priest for help. The priest told them a frightening thing. He claimed that there are more than 200 ghosts in their house. After this, it was named 200 Demons House.

Exorcism done at home

Eventually, a priest, the Reverend Michael Maginot, performed three exorcisms in the home, while LaToya Ammons performed one herself.

Although many believed that the family’s house was indeed haunted, Latoya Ammons’ claims also raised a lot of skepticism. For example, Joe Nickell, a paranormal specialist, investigated the case and interviewed many witnesses before reaching a conclusion and found that many aspects of the case had been misreported and exaggerated. Even in the incident where the boy was walking upside down on the wall, it was not reported that his grandmother was holding his hand during this time.

‘The moment the child is questioned, the ghost overpowers him’

In his investigative file, The 200 Demons House: A Skeptical Demonologist Report, Joe Nickell reports that a psychologist named Tracy Wright spoke to the youngest son. According to him, whenever the boy was questioned, he pretended to be under the control of the ghost. He even avoided answering many questions about the family’s paranormal experiences. Apart from this, the family’s landlords and previous tenants of the house before Ammons also did not experience any paranormal events in the house, so why did all this happen to the Ammons family? In such a situation, the big question is whether all this was true or a story made up by the family.

What happened to the Ammons family?

After living in the house for a little over six months, from November 2011 to May 2012, the family reportedly moved to Indianapolis, HuffPost reported. As shown in the last episode of The Deliverance, Loyota Ammons’ children were removed from her care after she was reported to the Department of Child Services. However, she later regained custody of her children in November 2012. Years after the incident, Zak Bagans, the creator and host of Ghost Adventures, bought the house and had it torn down. He said, there was something very, very dark, intelligent, and powerful there.

At the end of the film, it is shown that Ammons’ mother and the priest lose their lives while fighting the ghosts. However, nothing like this happened in reality. According to The Hollywood Reporter, during the preparation of the film, director Lee Daniels reportedly also met Loyota Ammons. He said that the film only tells Ammons’ story. We are at peace now.
