‘IC 814’ actress Dia Mirza made her Bollywood debut with the 2001 film ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’. Dia became quite popular among the audience with her first film itself. But after that she did not get many lead roles and her solo films could not do anything big.

In the recent past, Diya has shown her acting prowess in many strong supporting roles. Now Diya has said that she cannot watch her old films. She would feel a little ’embarrassed’ in doing so.

‘I didn’t know who I was’
In an interview with Indian Express, when Dia was asked how she looks back at her early work, she said, ‘Oh my God, I am embarrassed! Really. There was something in me, but I was not able to find my tune. I was not clear about who I am.’

Dia, who is seen in the Netflix series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’, said that she started working at a very young age and did not have any formal training in acting, so all her understanding developed while doing films.

Diya said, ‘When I came into the film business, there was only madness, there was no method in it. Scenes would come in front of you just a few minutes before the performance. And, women were not even considered intelligent. You were not considered a person who has the ability to think, and also to respond by feeling.’

She further said, ‘Back then you were just a window dressing, a part of the bigger plan, an accessory. I remember one thing which was a joke then, but now when I think about it, it offends a lot. Then I laughed it off and was told- ‘How can you refuse this film? It has a superstar and it has 6 songs!’

Diya started getting strong roles in the second half of the last decade. She appeared in Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘Sanju’, Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Thappad’, Taapsee Pannu’s film ‘Dhak Dhak’ and her show ‘Kafir’. Diya feels that she did not get strong roles because of her looks.

I did not get a good job because of my looks
She said, ‘You are also stereotyped because of the way you look. So maybe I don’t look good enough to be in an Anurag Kashyap film, but my mind and heart are in Anurag Kashyap films! The bigger point is that it takes time to shed the burden that the industry puts on you. I am more than this and I will keep pushing myself.’

Dia said that if someone had told her in her 20s that she would get the most exciting roles after turning 40, she would never have believed it. But she feels that today she is in a ‘sweet spot’ of being able to refuse projects. Dia said, ‘Luckily, the people whom I respect are finding me. I hope this thing never ends completely.’
