Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Vice President of National Conference Omar Abdullah explained the reason for his defeat against Engineer Rashid in the Lok Sabha elections from Baramulla seat on the platform of ‘Panchayat Aaj Tak’. He said that the situation changed in the last five-six days. An emotional campaign was conducted, some such slogans were used on which we remained silent. We felt that when they are not saying anything against us, then why should we unnecessarily open a new front. Engineer sahab’s sons said that my father has to be saved from hanging, so vote for us. I did not say anything on this. We also know that the charge on which he has been arrested does not have a death sentence.

He further said, ‘Engineer Rashid’s sons said in Baramulla that my father has to be released from jail, vote for him. We also know that no one can come out of jail by vote. Engineer Rashid has just come out of jail, so the court has granted him bail. If it was possible to come out of jail by taking votes, he would have come for five years and not for 20 days. Now we feel that we should not have remained silent on those things at that time. Because people were being deceived there in a way.’ Omar Abdullah also raised questions on Engineer Rashid getting bail from the court. He said that it is almost impossible to get bail in UAPA cases. I do not know how Engineer Rashid got bail under UAPA.

When Engineer Rashid reached Baramulla after coming out of jail, a huge crowd gathered to welcome him. When asked about this, Omar Abdullah said, “When we filed our nomination, there was no less crowd there. Even then people were very enthusiastic. But the situation changed in one or two weeks. It has been only one or two days. We will see in the next two-three weeks.” Is Engineer Rashid working on the instructions of Delhi? On this, Omar Abdullah said, “What did Home Minister Amit Shah say when he came to Jammu recently to release his party’s manifesto? He said that if we need anyone’s help to form the government apart from one or two parties, we are ready to take it.”

He further said, ‘He had named two or three parties and said that we will not work with them. Apart from two or three parties, who else he did not name, that is, who all are included in those with whom he is ready to work? All the independent candidates, Engineer Rashid’s party, Altaf Bukhari’s party, Ghunam Nabi Azad’s party and Sajjad Lone’s party. This means that suppose tomorrow the National Conference does not get the numbers to form the government. If BJP needs help, it can take help from these parties.’
