Bamako (Gardener): Can you imagine the Prime Minister of a country being fired for criticizing someone? Probably not. But this comes in a West African country where the cost of criticizing the prime minister is proving to be high. Things got so serious that the Prime Minister was removed from office. This real and shocking incident happened right here in Mali.
It is understood that Malian Prime Minister Jorge Mejia has been accused of condemning military rule in the country. He was subsequently fired on Wednesday. Malian military leader Colonel Assimi Goita issued a presidential decree in this regard. The order was read out by the Presidential Secretary-General on the national television channel “ORTM”. Mali has been ruled by military leaders since a junta seized power in 2020 and staged another coup the following year.
Junta Army Rules
The country is ruled by a military government. In June 2022, the “junta” promised to restore civilian rule by March 2024, but later postponed the election. A date for the presidential election has not yet been set. Maga was appointed prime minister by the army for a two-year term. At a rally of supporters on Saturday, he accused the “junta” of postponing the election without informing him. In response to MAGA’s statement, the “junta” organized demonstrations against him. The name of the new prime minister has not yet been announced. (Associated Press)
