The penalty miss that haunted John Terry: How ex-England star broke down in tears after missing crucial spot kick in CL final – as he blasts BBC for mocking Cristiano Ronaldo

Former England captain John Terry was one of the first to leap to Cristano Ronaldo’s defence after the BBC mocked the Portugal captain for missing a penalty during last night’s clash against Slovenia.

Ronaldo had endured a frustrating evening in front of goal but was handed a lifeline when Portugal were awarded a penalty with the scores still level in extra-time.

The 39-year-old took a deep breath and firmly fired his spot kick towards the bottom right corner, but it was heroically saved by Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak. An emotional Ronaldo then broke down in tears and had to be consoled by team-mates.

The striker – whose mother was also in tears after the miss – redeemed himself by scoring when the game went to a penalty shootout, where Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa made three saves to send his team to the quarter-finals of the Euros.

Although Portugal ended up going through, the BBC sparked fury after it mockingly captioned a replay of the penalty miss ‘Misstiano Penaldo’ during its analysis.

Terry, still likely haunted by his own penalty miss in the 2008 Champions League final, led the fury, sharing the caption to Instagram with the words: ‘BBC this is a disgrace!’

The former Chelsea and England defender had the chance to win the Champions League in Moscow 16 years ago – after Ronaldo, then a Manchester United player, had his penalty saved by Petr Cech.

Terry similarly broke down in tears after he slipped in the pouring Moscow rain and could only watch his penalty crash against the post, giving Manchester United a lifeline.

As United went on to lift the trophy, a tearful Terry had to be consoled by his team-mates and then manager Avram Grant.

Terry has previously admitted how the penalty has haunted him ever since.

Just two months ago, he revealed on the Up Front Podcast that it was ‘probably the worst moment in my footballing career’.

He added: ‘I’m still not over it today. I don’t think I ever will be. It’s interesting because as a player you have so many highs, but it’s the lows that stay with you longer.

‘That night we lost we went back to the hotel and the manager was asking us all to go down for a drink, but I stayed in my room because I couldn’t face the lads. Eventually I went down and had a beer with the rest of the group.

‘I just remember standing in my hotel room on the 25th floor, looking over Moscow and asking myself, ‘why then, why did it start raining then, why did I slip?

‘The hardest thing for me was that three days later we had a friendly for England against USA at Wembley and we drew 1-1 I scored a header from outside of the box. If I could swap any two goals in my career it’d be those two.’

He also previously told Sky in the months after the miss: ‘Every morning I wake up, that’s the first thing I think about. I am still so desperately disappointed about it.

‘But I am a big man with a big character and it is now down to me to deal with that.’

Speaking ahead of the 2008/09 season, he added: ‘I’m certainly looking forward to the new season so I can wipe away that bitter disappointment for the club, and especially for me.’

Terry was also joined by furious football fans in condemning the BBC for mocking Ronaldo.

One wrote on social media: ‘People preach about men’s mental health then laugh at Cristiano Ronaldo for showing emotion in a big moment under immense pressure then the BBC mock him as Misstiano Penaldo.

‘He deserves huge credit for stepping forward during the shootout and scoring.’

Another said: ‘BBC Sport this absolutely shameful. You ought to be ashamed of such unprofessional behaviour’.

While a third added: ‘Misstiano Penaldo! You can’t convice me that this isn’t Twitter account trolling – not the BBC.

‘The TikTokzation of football punditry is not something I ever wanted to see what happened to the game I love.’
